i've been a bit weirded out by some of the mastodon explainers i've seen online. starting by claiming how difficult it is to use feels like it insults the intelligence of the readership and scares people away. starting by explaining what "federation" means is going too far in the other direction and ALSO scares people away. mastodon is legitimately really cool and should be the most exciting thing happening online rn.

i gotta be real the jokes about the folks in the sub make me kinda miserable. like, no, i don't believe anyone on god's green earth is so ontologically evil that they deserve to die like this, miserable and scared and airless, trapped with others who are miserable and scare and airless. there's a historian on that crew who's just doing their job. there's a kid. the mega-rich can fuck off but as a human i do not wish that kind of suffering on anyone

and the idea that like. "why would you want to see the titanic anyway" as if human curiosity and a desire to see the past in whatever form is something only the rich have, as if the good proletariat don't give a shit or value knowledge or curiosity, as if anyone who might find the idea of seeing the wreckage of one of the most famous ships in history because the history is interesting and compelling to them — as if anyone like that just innately deserves to die for their hubris. i hope the next time you visit the grand canyon you call in and perish because real working class ppl should have better things to do than be curious about the world

they’re calling it block party 2024. just blocking and ignoring countless celebrities who havent said shit about palestine. influencers, actors, anyone who went to the met gala, whatever, they’re getting blocked. and people keep talking about how cathartic it is, how good it feels, how they never realized they could DO that. there was some kind of subconscious law against blocking famous people, but it’s broken, and people are LOVING it. and it’s WORKING. a social media/digital advertising coordinator was talking about how ad companies are PANICKING, because they can’t accurately target anymore. so many big influencers, including fucking LIZZO started talking about palestine the MOMENT their follower counts started going down. and the best part? no one is forgiving them. lizzo posted a tiktok asking people to donate to palestinian families, and all the comments just said you’re a multimillionaire. put your money where your mouth is. blocked.

i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.
